Minnesota REAL IDs

Minnesotans will be able to apply for a REAL ID-compliant card beginning October 1, but they will have two years to obtain one if they choose. That means residents will be able to use their standard license and ID cards for federal purposes, including boarding domestic flights, until October 1, 2020.

Since there is no need to obtain a REAL ID at this time, state officials are suggesting that residents wait to apply unless they need to change their name or address, or renew their current license. This will help ease the transition to the new card and will reduce wait times.

To properly prepare for REAL IDs and a new drivers service system that will produce them, called FastDS, the Blue Earth County License Center will not accept any driver’s license or identification card applications on Friday, September 28. All other License Center functions will still be available. The License Center will fully reopen Monday, October 1 at 8 a.m.

REAL IDs are being introduced in response to an act passed by Congress in 2005 that establishes minimum security standards for state-issued driver’s licenses and ID cards. Minnesotans will have many options for their driver’s license, identification and travel documentation needs and can learn more by reviewing

The Blue Earth County License Center is located at 410 S 5th Street in Mankato. For more information, contact the License Center staff at (507) 304-4340.
