Road conditions – whether it’s snow plowing in the winter or repairs in the summer – are the responsibility of the Public Works Department under the direction of the County Engineer. The Public Works Department is responsible for planning the County’s transportation system, as well as the construction and maintenance of County highways, State aid highways, bridges, and parks within the County. The Department purchases the right of way required for construction and maintenance, administers contracts, and employs inspectors to assure specifications in contracts.

The cost of constructing and maintaining the County
transportation system is financed from many sources. These include
state and federal grants and allocations, and a portion of local taxes
designated as the Road and Bridge Levy.
